Netherlands vs Croatia Preview

Netherlands act hosts at the Stadion Feijenoord in Rotterdam on Wednesday night to face Croatia in the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League. Ronald Koeman’s side enjoyed a successful group campaign in the Nations League, winning 5 of their 6 matches and remaining undefeated against the likes of Belgium, Wales and Poland. They scored 14 goals across these 6 games, the highest among all teams in the top-tier. The Oranje Army also had a decent World Cup campaign, faltering in penalties against the eventual winners Argentina after a late dramatic comeback courtesy of Weghorst’s goal in the 101st minute. Koeman’s side enter Wednesday’s semi-final on the back of 2 Euro qualifiers in March, losing one heavily to France while winning the other comfortably against Gibraltar. The Dutch have lost just once out of their nine games on home soil, with Italy defeating them in September 2020 – who could be their potential opponents in the final this time around if they successfully get past the Chequered Ones.

Croatia on the other hand followed their successful silver-medal 2018 World cup campaign with a bronze medal at Qatar in 2022. They won their Nations League group over the likes of France, Denmark and Austria after losing their opener 3-0 to the latter. Zlatko Dalic’s side won their final four games after a slow start to end the group stage on 13 points, eventually topping their group. They won each of their three away matches, conceding just one goal across these three matches. Following their successful World Cup campaign, they are already at the top of the pack in their Euro 2024 qualifying group – settling for a 1-1 draw against Wales followed by a convincing 2-0 victory against Turkey. Croatia have faced Netherlands on just 2 occasions previously, defeating the Oranje Army in the 1998 World Cup third place playoff before suffering a taste of their own medicine in a 2008 friendly, courtesy of goals by Heintiga, Vennegoor and Huntelaar.
