Match Preview:

England U21

Having already qualified for the knockouts, England U21s will be hoping to maintain their 100% record in the group stage as they take on struggling Germans at the Batumi Arena on Wednesday night. The Young Lions currently sit top of the table and will finish top irrespective of their result or the results elsewhere. Despite having a late scare against Czechia last Thursday, Lee Carsley’s men prevailed victorious by 2-0.

Although Czechia could finish on 6 points, level with England if they win against Israel, the Young Lions’ 2-0 victory against them would mean they remain top based on head to head result. The 2-0 victory against Israel three days later was rather straight forward, with goals by Antony Gordon and Smith Rowe killing the game from Israel’s perspective. This England U21 side has been on a rich vein of form, winning 14 out of their last 18 matches since March 2021 – facing defeat on only 3 occasions since. Arsenal’s wonder kid Smith Rowe will be hoping to make it 3 in 3 as Carsley’s men enter this matchup as clear favourites.

Germany U21

Germany U21 meanwhile sit one place shy bottom of the pack on mere goal difference – with just one point after two games. A missed penalty by Moukoko proved to be the difference maker in Germany’s opener against Israel – who failed to get past Peretz after Bisseck’s 26th minute equaliser – despite having 78% possession and 8 shots on target in the game. This result was followed by yet another day of missed chances three days later with Antonio di Salvo’s side dominating the game with 68% possession and a total tally of 28 shots. However, this dominance did not necessarily replicate into a positive result for the Germans, after a late Martin Vitik won the game for Czechia – leaving the reigning champions on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

Despite this being a must win game for di Salvo’s side, they must also rely on Czech Republic faltering against Israel – as a win or a mere draw will help the former secure second place and inevitably a place in the quarters. The three time U21 EURO champions haven’t been in the greatest of form recently, with just one win in their last 7 matches since they confirmed qualification for the U21 EURO finals. Di Salvo’s side will be desperate for a result on Wednesday and will be looking to seek revenge for the loss they faced the last time these two sides met last year in September.
