Match Preview

Canada

With a spot in the quarter-finals at stake, Canada take on the already eliminated Cuba in the third round of Group D in the Gold Cup. They currently sit third in the group with two draws in the two games they have played. It was a tale of two own-goals at Toronto in John Herdman’s opening game against Guadeloupe, after Russell-Rowe’s 93rd minute own-goal drew the latter level, with both sides sharing points on the day. However, it was a rather underwhelming performance by the Canadians four days later against Guatemala, with none of the attack being able to penetrate the opposition’s defense and the game ending 0-0.

Guadeloupe and Guatemala sit top two and face each other in the final group stage match, because of which Canada have a simple task at their hands to qualify – and that is to register a win against Cuba. Although easier said than done, John Herdman’s side should be confident of a victory against the Cubans, with their previous Gold Cup victory against Wednesday’s opponents being a 7-0 humbling in 2019. The Canadian attack has struggled in this tournament – however, the Cuban defense should allow them plenty of chances to get goal scoring opportunities on the day and keep their prospects of winning their first trophy in 23 years.

Cuba

Cuba on the other hand have lost both of their group stage matches heading into this one – with the loss to Guadeloupe two days back knocking them out of the tournament. Optimism was high among the Cuban faithful heading into this tournament, with Pablo Sanchez’s side having an impressive CONCACAF Nations League campaign, winning the group with 15 points in 6 matches. However, it’s just been downhill since with back to back defeats at the hands of Chile and Uruguay in friendlies before entering the Gold Cup.

Cuba also have an abysmal record against Wednesday’s opponents, who have been on a losing run against Canada since 2005. Los Leones del Caribe have conceded 17 goals in their last 4 meetings against Canada, while having scored none in the process. Cuba registered their last victory against them back in 2003 in the Gold Cup, and have lost every match against the North Americans since then.

Although Pablo Sanchez’s side have already been eliminated from the tournament, they will be hopeful to play for pride and improve this dreadful record against the Canadians. However, odds strongly favor the North Americans in this fixture to win and go through the quarter-final against a Cuban side who have lost each of their last 4 matches in all competitions, conceding 10 goals in the process while having scored just once.
