Belgium vs Austria Preview

Austria travel to Brussels to face hosts Belgium as they both look to keep their 100% record in Group F of the Euro Qualifiers intact. Belgium currently sit second in Group F having played just one match – thrashing Sweden 3-0 away from home in what was a dominant performance. They had a year to forget under Martinez in 2022 with underwhelming campaigns in both the UEFA Nations League and the World Cup in Qatar. Finishing on 10 points, Martinez’s side lost out the top spot to Netherlands who finished 6 points above them. Drawn with the likes of Croata, Morocco and Canada in the World Cup, they also looked favorites to win their group – however, with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss, the Red Devils failed to even qualify for the knockouts, finishing 3rd in the group. This spell of results led to the Spaniard resigning from the post of Head coach with Domenico Tedesco succeeding the former Everton manager. Since then, Belgium have played 2, winning both scoring 6 goals in the process. The 3-0 thumping of Sweden was followed by a well-earned 3-2 victory over the Germans in a friendly in March. These results have quite evidently brought a new sense of life among the Belgian faithful, as they would expect their side to top the group with ease.

Austria on the other hand sit top of the table, having played 2 and won both. They won their opening fixture quite convincingly against Azerbaijan scoring 4, while a late Gregoritsch winner in the 88th minute secured victory for Ralf Ragnick’s side over Estonia. Just like their opponents on Saturday, Austria had a UEFA Nations League campaign to forget, finishing bottom of their group. However, thanks to victories over Andorra and Italy in friendlies in last November, Ragnick’s side are on a four game winning streak – having scored 9 goals and kept 2 clean sheets. While both Austria and Belgium look favorites to go through from Group F, they would still want to claim bragging right by finishing top of the group. The visitors this time around will have to be on top form to get the better of the hosts in Brussels – however, Austria’s last victory over Belgium came all the way back in 1959, with the Red Devils undefeated in 5 meetings between the sides since then.
